ANGEL CAMACHO ALIMENTACION becomes the first company in the world to certify the carbon footprint of its olives and jams
Morón de la Frontera (Seville), February 14, 2012. The Seville-based agri-food company ANGEL CAMACHO ALIMENTACION, which markets FRAGATA olives and LA VIEJA FABRICA jams and marmalades among a host of other products, is now the first company in the world to calculate and verify the carbon footprint of its olives and jams under the PAS 2050:2011 standard. This reinforces the company’s status as an industry benchmark and recognises its efforts as a sustainable company on the world stage.
Using methodologies based on international measurement standards, the company has been able to identify the amount of greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere during the course of all the activities involved in the life cycle of its olives and jams, from acquisition of the raw materials right through to final waste management.
ANGEL CAMACHO ALIMENTACION has performed this calculation to obtain information on the main energy consumption during the processes involved, including harvesting, transport, handling of the raw materials, manufacture and distribution.
“These indicators comprise an excellent analytical tool to evaluate the real impact of our activities and it allows us to develop measures as part of our energy consumption reduction plan based on the use of efficient energy,” explains Pedro Cruces, Environmental and Engineering Manager at ANGEL CAMACHO. These savings measures will result in reductions to greenhouse gas emissions and accordingly the carbon footprint of these products.
The energy consumption reduction policy implemented by ANGEL CAMACHO ALIMENTACION has already achieved important results, including a 15% reduction in electricity consumption and the substitution of fuels such as diesel with biomass produced from olive stones. The results obtained through calculation of the carbon footprint have enabled implementation of new actions as part of this energy saving policy which will make the company even more effective in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ANGEL CAMACHO ALIMENTACION is once again a pioneer in the industry and will shortly be introducing seals on the labels of its main brands, FRAGATA olives and LA VIEJA FABRICA jams and marmalades, to demonstrate to its customers the major commitment it has made to the establishment of sustainable practices. Consumers all over the world are increasingly demanding products which are not only competitively priced but are also committed to the environment and sustainability, and carbon footprint certification meets these demands.
The certification agency OCA Cert was responsible for performing the evaluation in accordance with the PAS 2050:2011 standard and the certificate was presented to the company recently.
ANGEL CAMACHO ALIMENTACION is a family-owned Andalusian company founded in 1897 which produces and distributes a wide range of food products including table olives, olive oils and pickles under the FRAGATA and MARIO brands, jams and marmalades under the LA VIEJA FABRICA and STOVIT brands and teas and herbal teas under the SUSARON brand.
